Ameritography is a soon to be non-profit organization dedicated to documenting the landscape of America, specifically the delta region, through the use of multi-media technology. Taking a cue from noted photo-sociologists/historians such as Memphian JC Coovert, Dorothea Lange and D. Gorton, and of course James Agee and Walker Evans, Ameritography desires to open the eyes of the nation about the current times we live in, and leave a historical marker for those that follow.
Please come in and take a look at the photos, read the articles, listen to the oral histories and watch the videos. I think you'll learn something about this wonderfully complex and great country made up of wonderfully complex and ordinary people.
Take time to let us know what you think, and especially what you would like to see researched and documented.
Also, there are galleries of photos without words, like the photo of the sharecropper's church on the right I found deep in Mississippi Delta. It was surrounded by cotton fields as far as the eye could see. It was so hot that day it took only ten minutes for me to become soaked, and I was only taking photos, not working the fields. I imagine that this building was the only source of any type of happiness for those poor soul toiling these fields. So look at the galleries and see what your heart, mind and soul speaks to you about these photos and enjoy. |
